Is Milk Good for Your Teeth?

Is Milk Good for Your Teeth? When you were growing up, your parents likely told you that it was important for you to drink your milk in order to grow healthy and strong. While the necessity of milk for the development of strong muscles and skin is somewhat dubious, the indisputable fact is that milk is very good for your bones, and that does include your teeth.

Calcium for Stronger Teeth

The primary reason that milk is good for your teeth is the same thing that makes it good for your bones: in a word, calcium. Calcium is a vital component in building and maintaining strong bones. When you drink a single cup of milk, you are getting close to 300 milligrams of calcium. The calcium you ingest is stored almost exclusively in your bones, including your teeth.

However, calcium is not the only reason to drink milk. Milk helps your teeth in other ways as well. From helping to create a protective coating over your teeth to assisting with neutralizing the damaging sugars from other foods, milk is truly a wonderful substance for the health of your teeth.

Caseins to Protect Your Teeth

One thing that milk offers is a class of proteins called caseins. These proteins combine to coat your teeth with a film that covers the enamel of your teeth, offering more protection to tooth decay.

In addition, some of the components in milk can help to reduce the damage caused by eating sugary foods. This means that if you ever find yourself in the position of not being able to brush your teeth after eating sugary foods, drinking some milk might be the next best thing. It does matter the order in which you consume the foods—the milk should follow the sugary foods.

What's more, if you are counting your calories, skim milk offers the same benefits as whole milk. So next time you're in the store be sure to remember the milk!
