What to Do if You Feel a Rough Patch In Your MouthRough patches and lumps in and around the mouth can be indicative of oral cancer, and it is a good idea to come in and see one of our team members if you notice either of these symptoms. An oral cancer screening is a quick and simple test our dentists can perform to check if there are any lumps or rough patches that need further investigation.

Oral Cancer Screening

An oral cancer screening is both a physical and visual test. Lumps can be found under the chin, on the cheeks, around the nose, and in the mouth. Rough patches are generally found on the gums or lips. Most of the time, lumps and rough spots are benign and will either go away with time or produce no complications. However, it is always important to have them screened, in case they are cancerous.

Our dentist will look for lumps, and feel the skin, in case there are any that cannot be visually detected. The dentist will use a torch and mirror to investigate the oral cavity. An oral cancer screening can be as quick as 2 minutes.

If there are any lumps or rough patches, then our dentist will ask you to come back for further testing. Again, at this stage, lumps and rough patches can still be benign. However, coming in as soon as you notice the abnormality increases the success rate of possible treatments, and so it is important to come in once you have found a lump.

We advise our patients to come in every three years for an oral cancer screening, if they are above the age of 20, and once a year if they are over the age of 40. Our team is professionally trained to detect signs of oral cancer and can help trigger early cancer treatment.
